Landscape Aesthetics: Crafting Eden in Your Backyard
Eden in the Here and Now
Creating Landscape Architectural settings and plans for my clients in Westchester County and the surrounding NY Metro areas is a challenging and rewarding experience for my firm. The challenge is in clearly defining the aspirations of my clients, identifying the intrinsic values in sites, and translating these into three-dimensional, living designs. The reward is in the transformation of the different uses and the natural attributes of the site into a coordinated statement that reflects the functional, aesthetic, and philosophical objectives of the private or public owners.
Achieving a landscape design in harmony with my clients’ ideals requires an open dialog between my clients and my Landscape Architectural firm, an open mind to fresh ideas, and a willingness to consider change. Indoor and outdoor spaces need to flow smoothly together; they need to complement and reinforce each other.
The palette of the Landscape Architect consists of the materials we commonly find in nature: plants, soils, stone, and water. In the varied settings of a private residence and garden, a religious property, a multifamily building, hotel or streetscape, a thoughtful consideration of light and shade, space, and careful selection and placement of materials can define spaces and create a varied landscape at small, intimate, or much larger scale. For residences “foundation plantings”, patios, pools, outdoor kitchens, privacy fences and gardens are often considerations. For more publicly oriented spaces coordinated plantings, signage, outdoor furniture, and pavement are important. These might also include design guidelines and zoning regulations. This is where the creative dialog and design ideas come together!
